The concept of the piece is spiritual in nature. It is the idea of finding inspiration with in the self and then manipulating that image into something else once we achieve some sort of social recognition for our “identity” until it becomes something out of control and condemnable publicly. In this sense it mirrors the religious experience, both in its nature and in its unavoidable conclusion, at least in my opinion. As an atheist myself I see often the trappings of religious ideology in everyday behavior, overcoming faith for me was a difficult experience and illustrating it this way; as a product of the human experience and the longing for a sense of belonging gone out of control, helps me process my experience better. I hope that helps answer your question.
