the planting of oneself.
Forgiveness, nurturing and
eventually dead dreams decompose
flourishing in the compost of our lives.

sending our leafy limbs outstretched
embracing the sky

You are born to this earth worthless
less than that
a negative value we are meant to fill
though you never see the bill
you just have to find a way to pay it.
But don’t worry
someone will tell you
the ones who came before had a bill to pay too
and whatever they couldn’t they’ll bequeath to you.
Once you’ve tackled what they left behind
you can start adding value against your debt
but don’t be surprised when it’s time to collect
and there is a lifetime or more that is left
yet no time remains to pursue it.
Gift your unpaid debt to another
tell them all the things you wanted to do
to give your life value and prove your worth
and have them take on that pursuit
they can always deal with their own debt later.
We talk to ourselves with fists
a pugilist of reason
faced against years of abuse
the ebb and flow of emotional seasons
Only reason knows when to quit
but abuse will never stop
unloading blow after blow
to make sure no one else lives on top
Anything for that title
we have absently supplied
trading any confidence
for whatever drama we’ve cooked up inside.
With your value undefined
transactional praise given
where else could you we ever turn?
Unconceited, to the fights we are driven.
We can but hope that we win,
our critical self will fall
our ego rise the victor
but victory grants an albatross for us all
Our ego must be tempered
our abuse must die in shame,
either way our value breaks,
time and again it works exactly the same.
Without honesty we lose
the audience inside us
is only there for the show
ring the bell, choose yourself – the rest are treasonous.
