Quiet Triumph

What armor need truth?
Truth is indefensible,
indiscriminate,
indispensable.

No monsters exist beyond truths reach,
no obstacle can withstand its might,
but few fear its conquest.

For all its weight must be wielded,
and fewer still have such strength.
They speak its name,
list its dimensions,
even threaten,
but seldom brandish it;
betting everything on mere intent.

Like a young heart beneath mortality’s veil,
truth soothes with practicality,
overwhelms with certainty,
and in their embrace, reveals;

truth needs no armor.
No monster endures truth,
not even truth itself.

Tourniquet

Where the leg falls no flesh will connect.
The sock, the shoe – isolated.
Cold.
        Don’t,
                  don’t abandon it.

Warm stories yearning to be told
          in the distance,
                  aloft like sunrise in a clear sky,
                          like solitude.

The threads are there,
          woven in fragments of time;
let them lead you.
    Stumbled steps or confident strides –
                    no matter.

Let them lead you,
                      unravel
                          wrap all around you
                and there;
                      bind.

A Lament

I regret the tragedies that broke me,
the quiet moments after, parsing thoughts,
finding solace when I should have suffered,
and, at last, forgetting the lesson learned.

I regret mysteries I did not see,
those theaters of war where I should have fought,
the responsibilities I deferred,
and not recognizing what I had earned.

I regret not letting my anger be,
becoming the anxiety it sought,
not heeding the advice that was conferred,
and ignoring the peace that I so yearned.

I regret thinking time was like the sea,
capricious waves in which we were all caught,
a purity otherwise unperturbed,
and not an ocean, overfished and spurned.

Triumph Over Life

Life challenges us all each day
to wrestle it down to the ground
to tame it and teach it to play
or have it subdued and rope bound

Either way life will often sting
take us to places we should not go
but there is comfort, you should know
just remind yourself of one thing:

There is no place but at the top
no reason you should ever stop
be unyielding in your pursuit
harvest what you’ve earned of life’s fruit
Be satisfied with who you are
take pride that you have come this far
Do not bear this burden alone
even stumbled steps are milestones
(choose your stanza)

and in doing so you’ll understand
your happiness is at hand.
