Siren’s Call

An old sign hangs disheveled off the brick wall
broken neon tubes that spell out, “Siren’s Call”
one of two steel bars still screaming, “please, don’t fall!”

The bricks bleed rust down the side of the building
as if more than mortar was used for their melding
mineral substrate to match the signs welding.

The doors below rot in a weak wooden frame
years of struggle have warped them in knotted shame
discarded pallets no one wants to claim.

Once there were souls that lived behind those old doors
warm embers to subdue the cold bricked in core
but there is no life in that place anymore.

Propped on failing beams, it looms over the street
scouring at all the faces it might meet,
those lost vagabonds cast astray at its feet.

Daylight overwhelms the chaotic city
the sun, arousing beauty from the gritty,
would never touch those bricks, though moved by pity.

They found comfort only in the nights embrace
the moon and the stars having a softer face,
evening found this menace to be a sad place.

In the darkness those hidden lights would turn on
some stammered prophecy of the coming dawn
as if ashamed that its life had long since gone.

Our Wardrobe

Fine folds with matched edges
Frayed threads are unavoidable
But folded in they become
Inconsequential
Sewn together
Two isolated fabric tapestries
Become more in symphony

Something to wear against the world
A hat to protect us from the burning sun
A shirt to express ourselves
A sweater to keep us warm in the cold
A coat to stop the rain.

Separately fabric is beautiful potential

     A needle and thread
          Piercing and binding
               Through breaking the skin
                     Becoming stronger

Fabric in fugue is the foundation for life’s success.

Wabi-Sabi

It’s okay to not be enough
Your “enough” is a bit too much
we are all slightly out of touch
with this concept of being “tough”

Sometimes life can get pretty rough
but there is no training as such
it’s okay to not be enough
your “enough” is a bit too much

Lone wolves are a gamblers bluff
you can’t fake it when in the clutch
sometimes you need a careful crutch
to paint gold cracks in broken stuff.
It’s okay to not be enough
your “enough” is a bit too much.

Unfinished

In my youth I found challenge everywhere
hidden in words with dynamic meanings
discovering what it’s like to be new
and make sense of the world I was born in.
I hid behind books and entertainment;
as if that would make me feel less alone.

Once put on stage I had to take great care
to decide on my intent and leanings
and pray to find success among so few
who had failed life and lost all but their skin.
I redefined my goals and attainment;
I moved my failures into the end-zone.

My divorce left me drowning in despair
nothing before had been so demeaning
my children’s vision of me torn askew
losing house, home, and all that I had been.
I traded it all for an arraignment;
she poisoned the term “father” on her own.

The days have since wore me down smooth and bare
given me time for order and cleaning
to find value in the years that ensue.

Goals

Things you should do before you go:
– Love so deeply you cry yourself to sleep
– be humbled as you watch your hero weep
– give up on something you are not good at
– make one attempt at “the aristocrats!”
– teach a stranger how to do something new
– teach them how to do it better than you
– endanger yourself helping another
– have a friend call you sister or brother
– find your real family out in the wild
– be accosted for acting like a child
– break something that is irreplaceable
– discover your goals are erasable
– do nothing so long you are entertained
– build worlds from the errant thoughts that remain
– kill and bury yourself at least three times
– forgive yourself of all your crimes
– transcribe your mind into a work of art
– share the words that are etched within your heart
– lose yourself in a place you can’t pronounce
– find yourself mirrored in someone who counts
– tell someone you love deeply “goodbye”
– be content enough with yourself to die.

Rachael Makes Her Own Place

When her eyes light up like fire
it warms me to the core
to see her mind contract and expand
embracing all that’s in store.

To find and explore new thoughts
that she wants to understand
to give more than she ever got
with an energy that will never tire.

If you ever met her before
she’s likely left you inspired
with her offer of a helping hand-
a trait I’ve always admired.

She’ll feed you the food off her plate
and give you advice to contemplate
she retains all the lessons she was taught
and is the first to suit up as your mascot

A master of wit and satire
because laughter is one of her few desires
I couldn’t ask for anything more
the person she is I truly adore.

What fortune to live a life with her in it!
That brilliant, brave and beautiful misfit.

Samsquanch

Samuel Riley Behlke
is always there to help me
with a heart that’s exposed and raw
he fights his way out the worlds maw

In this strange and changing place
Samuel finds his own pace
focusing on the things he loves
and what he doesn’t, he’ll rise above

Because above all Samuel has tenacity
and a love for others in great capacity
he wants always to be part of a team
and to be held in great esteem

Which isn’t hard at all to do
because Sam is genuine, through and through.
His honesty will catch you off guard
while all subtlety he will discard.

We have shared some fascinating talks
and gone on some amazing walks
ever raged against each other as foes
but there are a few things I hope he knows

I love Samuel very much
and he may be my only son as such
but in that son I’ve gained a friend
a hero, a scholar and a mentorship that never ends.
