Impetus

Wind through the desert finds levity
rising with the accumulated heat
flowing past deep read monoliths
that whisper of oceans long dead,
of fish and whales and other beasts.
Whispers overwhelmed by present sounds
birds, coyotes and rodents
rocks tumbling beneath careless paws
and – another noise, angry and forced.

The skyline is a well tended furnace
clouds just kindling in the fire
thick cords of pine
brittle bark, fractured and eclectic
some loose straw stretching over the canopy;
the fires on the horizon catch them all
draw them over the precipice of day
to slumber amongst the embers
yet – a false light rises with the night.

The smell of ancient minerals
millions of years in the heat,
rust and stagnation permeates
with mesquite and forgotten rain.
When the sun is at its highest
the scent of burnt oxygen prevails
now at night creosote returns
a muted persistent dream
but – a foul odor imposes.

Steel tracks scream through the canyons
level the mountains, fell the trees
cutting through with lines and destinations
like the maps that inspired their creation
while great pillars of soot vomit out their tops,
too dark to for any light to survive
and the smell of coal, ground metal, motor oil
announce that the train has arrived.

The Forest Through the Trees

Approaching a House in the Cool Evening
I’m caught, mid step, by the lattice work
tiny wood planks interlocked
holding hands, passing over and under
form and function in tandem
drowning in green chaos, unaware
of the waxy verdant tendons
               strangling them.

Desperately those vines climb
towards a sun they anticipate
but cannot know in this darkness,
the ambitions of the young – the restless
trapezing over the dormant dreams
of the old dead gods that once stood
tall
proud
fierce
and free
that once reached for the same sun
for a life that could never be.

The Fox at the End of Time

He leaps
trusting his feet
trusting the earth beneath them.
Speed and grace
feed confidence like flames
sends it racing over hills
sharing in its color.

Darting through grass and trees
the pads of its paws feel like heavy rain
a resonance of force
always remains
bouncing through the bones
      a guitar well strung
               finely tuned
strumming a rhythm of motion
a crescendo reached
only now – with the rest of time behind us.

It is beautiful music
silenced by pavement
interrupted by the sounds of cars;

Some screeching to a halt
               others accelerating.

Evolution

[Camel]  God created man
                faith over reason
speak to me about bringing evidence
                lies from corrupted mind
                overcoming truth in ending curiosity
                experience Speaks louder
[Lion]     Believe
                louder speaks experience
                curiosity ending in truth overcoming
                mind corrupted from lies
evidence bringing about me to speak
                reason over faith
                man created god.

[Child]    Experience curiosity
                reason that by definition
                in truth
                thou art god.
